1997 Wholesale Trade (NAICS Sector 42)
Publications related to the economy date back to the first census of manufactures taken in 1810. Over time, the scope of what we now call the Economic Census was expanded to include mining, commercial activities, and services.
In 1902, when Congress authorized the creation of a permanent Census Bureau, they directed that the bureau take a census of manufactures every five years, which began in 1905. Censuses of retail and wholesale trade and construction industries started in 1930. Since 1967, the Census Bureau has taken the Economic Census every year ending in “2” and “7.”
All publications from economic censuses 1967 to 2002 are available online as PDFs, as are some dating back to 1810. Economic Census stats from 1997 and later are also available through American FactFinder. Beginning in 2007, the bureau ceased publishing Economic Census stats in reports. Instead, you can find Economic Census data online by industry, topic, and geography.
