AUG. 18, 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau released data from the 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).
Accompanying the data release are a number of supporting materials to assist data users, such as metadata, crosswalks and an updated users’ guide. Also released are a set of tables providing wealth and debt measures for a variety of demographic, social, and household characteristics. These measures include information on major contributors to wealth such as home equity and retirement accounts, as well as common types of debt such as vehicle debt, credit card debt, and student loans. The Census Bureau plans to release research briefs highlighting various social and economic topics in the coming months.
The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that interviews the same individuals over a four-year period. The survey provides comprehensive information about the income and program participation of individuals and households in the United States. SIPP collects data and measures change for many topics including economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, child care, and food security.
