Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC) and Demographic Profile

These 2020 Census data products provide demographic and housing characteristics of local communities. The final list of tables, table shells and lowest level of geography by table for the DHC and Demographic Profile are available in the 2020 Census DHC and Demographic Profile Data Table Guide. The technical documentation is available on the Decennial Census Technical Documentation webpage. (Scheduled for embargo starting May 23, for public release May 25.)

Community Resilience Estimates for Puerto Rico

The U.S. Census Bureau will release the first Community Resilience Estimates (CRE) for Puerto Rico. These new estimates are an expansion of the CRE first launched in 2020. CRE provide an easily understood metric for a community’s capacity to withstand and recover from a disaster – such as a hurricane or hazardous event. Using Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) restricted microdata and small area estimation methods, the experimental estimates measure social vulnerability to disasters at the state/commonwealth, municipio and census tract geographic levels. The CRE for Puerto Rico will come with an interactive mapping tool. (Scheduled for release May 31.)

State Level Geographic Mobility and Place of Birth Data

The U.S. Census Bureau will release new geographic mobility and place of birth data at the state level. These data come from the 2021 American Community Survey (ACS). The one-year state-to-state migration flows table will provide estimates of the number of people moving between origin and destination geographies. The 2021 place of birth table package will show estimates for state of current residence by area of birth. (Scheduled for release June 8.)

School Enrollment Report

The U.S. Census Bureau will release a new report that examines school enrollment in 2021 and changes in enrollment patterns from prior years using statistics from American Community Survey. The report details enrollment from pre-school through college. It includes public and private schools as well as homeschooling. (Scheduled for release June 8.)

Employment and Labor Force Characteristics of Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Married Householders and Their Spouses

The Census Bureau will release an updated table package, Employment and Labor Force Characteristics for Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Married Householders and Their Spouses, with statistics from the 2021 American Community Survey. Data are available at the national and state levels and for 15 selected metropolitan areas. Statistics include key employment, labor force and work status statistics broken down by race and Hispanic origin for same-sex and opposite-sex spouses. (Tentatively scheduled for released in May/June.)

Selected Population Tables and American Indian and Alaska Native Tables Webinar and Embargo

The U.S. Census Bureau will host a webinar in advance of the embargoed release of Selected Population Tables and American Indian and Alaska Native Tables. The webinar on June 8 at 2 pm ET will go over what’s covered in the release as well as where to find the data on data.census.gov. The data tables are set to be embargoed beginning on June 13 at 10 am ET for public release on June 15. The data tables are released approximately every five years and provide the most detail for groups that are typically too small to be included in the annual 5-year ACS estimates. This is the third time the Census Bureau has released these detailed 5-year ACS estimates. (Scheduled for release in June.)

Vintage 2022 Population Estimates for the Nation, States and Counties by Age, Sex, Race and Hispanic Origin and for Puerto Rico Commonwealth and its Municipios by Age and Sex

The U.S. Census Bureau will release Vintage 2022 population estimates by demographic characteristics June 22. Internet tables and detailed downloadable files will show annual population estimates for the nation, states and counties by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin, and for Puerto Rico Commonwealth and its municipios by age and sex between April 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022. (Scheduled for embargo starting June 20, for public release June 22.)

Household Pulse Survey

The experimental Household Pulse Survey is an effort by the U.S. Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies to provide near real-time data on how the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent issues are affecting people’s lives to inform federal and state response and recovery planning. Data collection for phase 3.8 will begin March 1, with data dissemination, including detailed data tables and public use data files, on a monthly basis.

School Pulse Panel

The Census Bureau has begun collecting data from schools for the new School Pulse Panel (SPP) as part of efforts to monitor the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students and staff in U.S. public schools. The SPP, sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics, collects data on instructional mode offered, learning loss mitigation strategies, staffing levels, safe and healthy school mitigation strategies, use of technology and more. 2022 Economic Census Responses Still Being Collected

We understand this is a busy time of year for many businesses and those that received the 2022 Economic Census may not have had a chance to respond. While the due date has passed, businesses that require more time to submit can log in to their accounts at portal.census.gov to request an extension, however the window for requesting one is closing. Businesses with an extension will have until May 30 to reply before non-response follow up efforts resume. For more information, including details on how to report, visit census.gov/econ. 

2021 E-Stats Report

The U.S. Census Bureau will release a data visualization that summarizes 2021 e-commerce statistics on shipments, sales and revenues from key sectors of the economy: manufacturing, wholesale, services and retail. Prior releases of e-commerce statistics are available for the nation dating back to 1998. The estimates in this data visualization are based on data collected from separate surveys: the 2021 Annual Survey of Manufactures, the 2021 Annual Wholesale Trade Survey, the 2021 Service Annual Survey, and the 2021 Annual Retail Trade Survey. Measures of total economic activity and e-commerce are presented in this data visualization to provide a broad perspective of e-commerce activity across several sectors. 2021 ZIP Code Business Patterns

The ZIP Code Business Patterns (ZBP) upcoming annual series release provides 2021 economic data at the ZIP code level. ZBP data include the number of establishments at the employment-size class by industry level (2- through 6-digit NAICS). ZBP data also include the number of establishments, employment during the week including March 12, and first-quarter and annual payroll at the total for all sectors level NAICS 00. (Scheduled for release May 25.)

Exploring Census Data Webinar Series: Emergency Management

Census Bureau subject matter experts will present data available from both economic and demographic sources. You will learn about business and demographic programs along with resources available to understand the landscape of the community. The session includes live demonstrations on how to find local data that are key to help plan, prepare and recover when emergencies occur. There will be an opportunity to connect with our experts via live chat and during the Q&A segment of the webinar. This webinar is part 2 of 6 in a series to help data users discover Census Bureau data related to people, places and the economy. (Scheduled for May 25.)

2021 State and Local Government Finances

The U.S. Census Bureau will release data from the 2021 Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances. These data shows revenues, expenditures, debt and cash and security holdings by level of government. Level of government includes state, local and state and local combined. The statistics are organized by state. (Tentatively scheduled for release May 31.)

2022 Census of Governments, Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll

The U.S. Census Bureau will release a summary brief on the Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll from the 2022 Census of Governments (CoG). The CoG is the most comprehensive, comparable and precise measure of public sector activity within the U.S. economy. It’s conducted every five years and comprised of over 90,000 government organizations. Additional data products from the 2022 Census of Governments will be released later this year and into 2024. (Scheduled for release June 14.)

New Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes Partners

The U.S. Census Bureau will release the names of new data partners in the Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) experimental data product. PSEO tabulations show earnings and employment outcomes for graduates of U.S. post-secondary institutions and are generated by linking graduate transcript records to Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics wage data. This offers prospective students a comprehensive assessment tool to find out how much they could potentially earn by degree and institution. The Census Bureau conducts the PSEO in cooperation with higher education institutional systems to examine college degree attainment and graduate earnings. (Scheduled for release June 29.)

Business Trends and Outlook Survey

The Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) measures business conditions on an ongoing basis. BTOS experimental data products are representative of all single-location employer businesses in the U.S. economy, excluding farms. The data allow greater insight into the state of the economy by providing continuous, timely data for key economic measures. Data are released biweekly and available by sector, state and the 25 most populous metropolitan statistical areas.

Monthly Business Formation Statistics

Business Formation Statistics (BFS) provide timely and high-frequency data on business applications and employer business formations monthly. The data are available at the state, regional and national levels and by industry sector at the national level. The next monthly BFS release is June 20 and will include May 2023 data. Business Formation Statistics - Release Schedule (census.gov).

AAPOR Research Conference

May 10 — U.S. Census Bureau researchers and other survey research professionals across the nation presented findings at the 78th Annual American Association for Public Opinion Research Conference. This year’s conference was a forum for Census Bureau staffers to present and discuss their research on a spectrum of topics.

Census Bureau Announces Phase 1 Winners for First-Of-Its-Kind Venture Fund on Supply Chain Data

May 10 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced the winners of the first phase of the StatVentures Supply Chain Challenge. StatVentures is a pioneering initiative of Census Open Innovation Labs (COIL) aimed at enhancing data collection methods through new technologies and outside collaborations.

Census Bureau Releases New Report About Persistent Poverty

May 9 — The Census Bureau released a new report about persistent poverty at both county and subcounty geographies. To identify counties in persistent poverty, this report incorporates poverty estimates from the 1990 and 2000 Censuses and the 2005–2009 and 2015-2019 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. Persistent poverty is different from and should not be confused with chronic poverty. Chronic poverty identifies individuals and families consistently in poverty over time; persistent poverty in this report focuses on geographic locations that had high poverty rates for an extended time. 

Total Population Estimates for Incorporated Places and Minor Civil Divisions; Housing Unit Estimates for the Nation, States and Counties; Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas

May 18 — Internet tables and detailed downloadable files show annual population estimates for cities and towns, including incorporated places and minor civil divisions along with nation, state and county housing unit estimates as of July 1, 2022. Also released are downloadable files for annual population estimates for metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas.

Annual Survey of School System Finances

May 18 — The U.S. Census Bureau released new FY 2021 Annual Survey of School System Finances tables. The tables provide new data on current spending per pupil in addition to data on revenues, expenditures, debt and assets for public elementary-secondary education (pre-K through 12th grade) in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“The Importance of Off-Farm Income to the Agriculture Economy”

May 17 — The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and the Labor Market Information (LMI) Institute will present, “The Importance of Off-Farm Income to the Agriculture Economy.” Off-farm jobs and income are critically important to farmers and ranchers as the rural and agricultural economy has evolved over the past half century to benefit connected and diverse communities. While growing rural and urban economic interdependence can be hard to see at times, an appreciation of this dynamic relationship is vital to informing policies that strengthen the financial health of communities and agricultural producers alike. Misunderstanding of “rural” connectiveness and industry diversity can lead to well-intentioned federal programs that hinder policy efforts to support these communities. Using Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) data, studies found commuting gains speed, especially in rural counties.

Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics

May 11 — The U.S. Census Bureau released the 2019 Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D). This annual series provides subnational data on demographics of business owners for businesses that have no paid employees or payroll, are subject to federal income tax and have receipts of $1,000 or more. The NES-D statistics are the accompanying dataset to the Annual Business Survey (ABS) data on employer businesses and when combined with the ABS, provide a complete picture of business owner demographics such as sex, race, ethnicity and veteran status.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: May 2023

March 3 — Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month began 25 years ago to recognize the growing contributions of these populations to our nation. To help celebrate, we have a host of demographic and economic statistical information about the Asian and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander populations.

America Counts tells the stories behind the numbers in a new and inviting way. We feature stories on various topics such as families, housing, employment, business, education, the economy, emergency preparedness and the population. New stories include:

Providing Users With Accessible Data

May 19 — Many people associate the U.S. Census Bureau with the decennial census, the once a decade count of every person living in the United States. But that’s not all we do. The Census Bureau conducts more than 130 censuses and surveys each year.

The American Community Survey (ACS) is one of those surveys – and, its data reflect what our communities look like, how they have changed, and how those changes impact our daily lives. Its data, along with data collected from our other surveys, also affect where, and when, new roads, schools, after-school programs, or hospitals are specifically placed in our communities.

What to Expect: Disclosure Avoidance and the 2020 Census Demographic and Housing Characteristics File

May 16 — On May 25, the U.S. Census Bureau is set to release the next wave of data from the 2020 Census providing new details about our nation and communities. This next wave of data is called the Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC). The characteristics include sex and age, race, Hispanic origin, relationship, group quarters, household and family type, tenure (whether the home is owned or rented) and vacancy. At the same time, we will also release the Demographic Profile, which provides an overview of the characteristics in one, easy-to-reference table.
