American Indian and Alaska Native

Prior to the 2010 Census, the Census Bureau adopted the following American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) policy statement (PDF - 177 KB). This policy outlines nine principles that provide general guidelines for Census Bureau interactions with federally recognized tribal governments. On October 12, 2009, Director Robert M. Groves formally reaffirmed (PDF - 74KB) this policy.

All Census Bureau initiatives for American Indian and Alaska Native communities reflect the Commerce Department's 1995 American Indian and Alaska Native Policy (PDF - 593 KB).
