Prior to 2001 the American Housing Survey (AHS) public use file (PUF) used the same geography definitions (central cities, suburbs, non-metropolitan, urban and rural) as presented in the AHS publications, series H-150. Beginning in 2001 the publication contains data using 1990 geographic definitions. The 2001 PUF continues to use 1980 geographic definitions.
Because the publication and the PUF in 2001 use different geographic area definitions, the weights used in the publication (1990-geography-based weighting) and the weights used in the PUF (1980-geography-based weighting) are also different. For example, a unit classified as rural in 1980 but urban in 1990 would receive a rural weight on the PUF and an urban weight for the publication.
Although both weighting procedures produce the same total count of housing units for the United States (119,117,000) as a whole, differences exist for most subcategories.
This web site provides html tables which contain 2001 data using the 1990 geography and 1990-geography-based weighting which are consistent with the 2001, series H-150 publication. ( www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/ahs/ahs01/ahs01.html)
Also available are html tables which contain 2001 data using the 1980 geography and 1980-geography-based weighting. These tables should be used for historical comparisons, since prior AHS publications used 1980 weighting and geography. These tables are consistent with the 2001 Public Use File (PUF). They can generally be replicated by PUF users, although some discrepancies will be produced by topcoding in the PUF and other confidentiality suppressions.
