Error in the variable BUYG
We have an error on the 1999 AHS-N microdata with the variable BUYG, and in the 1999 series H-150 publication on Table 1A-5 for the line "Gas" in the item "Units using each fuel." The error was corrected for the 1999 Metropolitan publications, series H-170.
BUYG is the variable that indicates whether the cost of the gas is included in the rent for occupied units. The coding for BUYG is:
Codes of ‘1' and ‘B' in BUYG are in error. Users of the public use file should NOT use BUYG to get a total count of occupied units that do or do not use gas. They should use GASPIP. The coding for GASPIP is:
In the variable BUYG codes of ‘2' (included in rent, other fee...) and ‘3' (obtained free) are ok and can be used.
Table 1A-5 of the 1999 AHS-N publication showed that there were 102,124,000 occupied units (68,323,000 owners and 33,801,000 renters) that used gas. These data are incorrect. The correct data are 72,201,000 occupied (49,475.000 owners and 22,726,000 renters) units that used gas in 1999.
