2019 Capital Expenditures for Robotic Equipment

Beginning with the 2018 Annual Capital Expenditures Survey, capital expenditures for robotic equipment were collected to fill a data gap in response to growing interest and high demand by researchers and congress, etc. on measuring robotics as part of official government statistics. Specifically, measures of robot adoption intensity and the impact on employment and productivity.

The Census Bureau made it a priority to:

  1. Measure the industries that are using robotic equipment to meet the needs of its data users.
  2. Publish the robotic equipment expenditures data annually.

Capital expenditures for both industrial and service robotic equipment were collected from employer businesses at the company level and assigned to the company's primary business activity at sampling.

Businesses were asked to provide a description of the types of robotic equipment the company purchased to validate in-scope equipment and adjust for out-of-scope equipment to ensure the highest quality data.

The Census Bureau’s 2019 ACES results will include national level estimates of capital expenditures for robotic equipment by 2-digit NAICS sector and select 3-digit and 4-digit NAICS industries. The data are tabulated in the 2012 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code.
