Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) Press Kit

The purpose of the Post-Enumeration Survey is to measure the accuracy of the census by independently surveying a sample of the population. The survey estimates the proportion of people and housing units potentially missed or counted erroneously in the census.

March 2022

In March, the Census Bureau released national PES results that showed no statistically significant net national coverage error for the nation but undercounts and overcounts for some demographic groups. 

May 2022

The U.S. Census Bureau released the results from the 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) for the 50 states and District of Columbia on May 19.  

August 2022

The remainder of the PES estimates, including results for housing units and undercount and overcount rates for Puerto Rico, were released on August 16..

August 16, 2022

The U.S. Census Bureau released the final set of results from the 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) on Aug. 16. These results provide insight into the quality of the 2020 Census counts for the Puerto Rico population and housing units. It also includes coverage estimates for housing units across the nation, regions, states and the District of Columbia, and by selected characteristics for the nation.

The U.S. Census Bureau released the results from the 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey (PES) for the 50 states and District of Columbia on May 19.  

A webinar on “Understanding the Count: A Discussion on the Latest 2020 Post-Enumeration Survey Results” was held to highlight the results.

The webinar explained the purpose, methodologies and types of results that will be made available from the PES and DA.
