MAY 16, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released a new summary report and data tables for the 2023 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll. These statistics provide a comprehensive look at the employment of the nation’s state and local governments. The survey provides state and local government data on full- and part-time employment, full-time equivalent employment, and gross monthly payroll for March 2023 statistics by governmental function. Federal, state and local governments, and education and research organizations use public employment and payroll data for comparative studies and activities such as development of the government component of the gross domestic product (GDP). The release also includes an individual unit file containing all data items by data code within the survey.
In addition to the new 2023 data, the Census Bureau released revised tables for 2021 and 2022. More information is available at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/apes/data/datasetstables.html.
