Census Bureau Releases New Annual Integrated Economic Survey Data

SEPT. 3, 2026 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released the full dataset from the 2024 Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES), offering a single, comprehensive annual snapshot of U.S. employer businesses.

The AIES provides economic data, including business revenue, expenses, payroll and employment at detailed geographies. Today’s release includes data at the national, regional and divisional levels, with state-level estimates available for selected sectors. Sectors are based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

Highlights at the national level include:

Retail

  • Food and Beverage Stores (NAICS 445) brought in an estimated $982.2 billion in revenue and employed an estimated 3,395,400 people.
  • Health and Personal Care Stores (NAICS 446) generated an estimated $438.9 billion in revenue.

Services

  • The Real Estate subsector (NAICS 531) employed an estimated 1,815,383 people with an estimated $120.9 billion in annual payroll.
  • Hospitals (NAICS 622) generated an estimated $1,610.5 billion in revenue and employed an estimated 6,724,832 people.

Manufacturing

  • Food Manufacturing (NAICS 311) employed an estimated 1,702,155 people and generated an estimated value of shipments of $1,054.3 billion.
  • Chemical Manufacturing (NAICS 325) had an estimated value of shipments of $918.2 billion.

Wholesale

  • Motor Vehicle and Motor Vehicle Parts and Supplies Merchant Wholesalers (NAICS 4231) earned an estimated $1,157.9 billion in sales while employing an estimated 435,006 people.
  • Petroleum and Petroleum Products Merchant Wholesalers (NAICS 4247) sales were an estimated $1,614.0 billion.

About the Annual Integrated Economic Survey

The AIES covers domestic, private sector and nonfarm employer businesses (those with paid employees) in operation for at least some part of 2024, located in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, and classified in one of the 19 in-scope sectors defined by the 2017 NAICS.

A sample of approximately 385,000 businesses is selected based on geographic location and industry. Estimates are not adjusted for price changes and may be subject to sampling variability and other sources of error. The Census Bureau has reviewed the 2024 AIES data products to ensure appropriate access, use and disclosure avoidance protection of confidential source data.
