Experimental Small Area State Estimates for the Annual Integrated Economic Survey

Experimental Small Area State Estimates for the Annual Integrated Economic Survey

The Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES) collects annual establishment data on key economic statistics such as employment, payroll, first quarter payroll and revenue. This experimental product1 produces estimates of totals for the four core variables (employment, payroll, first quarter payroll and revenue) within industries detailed at the 4-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) level for all fifty states and the District of Columbia. For select sectors (i.e., 2-digit NAICS level), additional breakouts include type of operation and tax status. Direct survey estimates at this granular level are imprecise because of limited sample size to reduce respondent burden and survey cost. Using a Bayesian Fay-Herriot (F-H) area-level model from small area estimation methodology, the AIES state estimates are a composite of the direct survey estimates and indirect model-based estimates, aimed at improving precision. For more information, see technical documentation below.
