Experimental Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (EXP-NESD)

Experimental Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (EXP-NESD)

EXP-NESD expands and enhances the annual Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D) series by developing and adding a set of administrative-records-based characteristics relevant to nonemployers, offering valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and businesses.

Currently the annual Experimental NES-D set covering 2017-2022 includes:

  • Wage Work. EXP-NESD provides enhanced statistical coverage of the relationship between self-employment and wage work. Specifically, the tables provide new information about the share of nonemployer businesses whose owners also work for a wage. The data offers a better understanding on how business owners engage in both wage work and entrepreneurship, how these patterns change over time, and the gig economy.
  • Firm Age. EXP-NESD introduces statistics by firm age, shedding light on how self-employment patterns evolve over the business life cycle.
