This new experimental data product augments the core, annually released Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D) data to provide enhanced statistical coverage of the relationship between self-employment and wage work, which can offer valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and businesses. Specifically, the tables provide new information about the share of nonemployer businesses whose owners also work for a wage, by the demographics of the business owners, at the national level and by industry.
This data can be used to better understand how business owners engage in both wage work and entrepreneurship, and how these patterns are changing over time. Applications of this dataset range from policy analysis, to gig-economy research and economic forecasting.
Feedback from data users and stakeholders on the quality and usefulness of this new product can be shared by email at erd.nesd.experimental@census.gov.
