On July 2, 1909, Congress approved the 1910 Census Act, the first under the newly established Bureau of the Census. It moved Census Day from June 1 to April 15 and allowed the agency to increase its permanent staff, including the addition of an assistant director, chief statistician, and chief geographer. In March 1910, the Census Bureau sent newspapers this press release of President William Howard Taft's official proclamation of the Thirteenth Decennial Census.
