Measuring Education in the Current Population Survey

Written by:

Since 1940, a question on “highest grade or year of school completed” has been the fundamental means of assessing educational attainment both in the census and in the Current Population Survey.  In 1990, the census question was updated, and, beginning in January 1992, the CPS adopted a similar updated question.  This report examines the change and presents data from a national CPS test conducted in February 1990.
