Differences in Parental Mortality by Age and Race/Ethnicity: 2022

Written by:
Report Number: P70-195

Introduction

Losing a parent is often a deeply emotional and difficult experience. With recent data from the 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), this research brief examines variation in parental mortality by age and race/ethnicity. It builds upon a recent data visualization from the 2021 SIPP that examined patterns of parental mortality between 2019 and 2021, capturing key years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This report updates many of those estimates and elaborates on the factors associated with losing a parent.
