Government Organization Summary Report: 2022 & 2025

Written by:
Report Number: E22-COG

This report highlights national trends in state and local government data for 2022 and 2025 in the U.S. It also showcases data derived from the newly released annual Government Organization series data tables and Public Use File, which is a listing of all active independent government units, dependent school systems, and public pension systems.

Highlights

  • The 2022 Census of Governments reported 90,837 local governments in the U.S. By 2025, this number had increased to 91,438. This was largely due to increases in special district government counts in four states—Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, and Texas.
  • Six states—Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia—had the largest concentration of dependent school systems in the nation.
