Executive Summary

This report presents statistics on scientists and engineers (S/E) in Finland based upon the 1993 regional employment statistics register. Finland lies in the middle range of countries in this series concerning the share of scientists and engineers in the economically active population. In 1993, Finland had approximately 18 scientists and engineers per 1,000 members of its economically active population (Figure 1). S/E’s education levels far exceed those of the overall labor force and have helped Finland become a leader in selected areas of communications technology.
