Age Differences Among Coresidential Partners

Written by:
Working Paper Number: SEHSD WP2023-10

Introduction

This poster uses the 2021 1-year American Community Survey to examine age gaps for opposite-sex, same-sex male, and same-sex female cohabiting and married couples. On average, same-sex couples experience larger age differences than their opposite-sex counterparts. Furthermore, the age gap among same-sex male couples significantly differs from the gap of same-sex female couples, suggesting that grouping men and women into one category
can obscure diversity in the experiences of
male-male and female-female couples.
