In 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) implemented changes to the methodology used to produce Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) estimates annually. The improvements to the methodology consisted of minor modifications to resources and more extensive updates to poverty thresholds. The revised methodology was first implemented for reference year 2019, with two estimates provided to compare estimates across the original and revised methodologies. This paper extends the revised methodology back to 2009, the beginning of the SPM historical time series, and compares the revised SPM estimates to the published series.
