Introduction

Dynamic demographic trends in recent decades have led to substantial changes to initial family formation in the United States. Adults are not only delaying marriage and/or having children, but an increasing amount are opting out of them entirely. In order to take a comprehensive look these trends, we examine changes in initial family formation using the 2022 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). This research includes women born 1940 to 1979 and select comparisons will be made by ten-year birth cohorts, as well as by race and Hispanic origin.
