Former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Chief Information Security Officer Kevin Smith Named Census Bureau’s Chief Information Officer

June 6, 2016 Kevin Smith will join the U.S. Census Bureau as the associate director for information technology and chief information officer beginning this month, Census Bureau Director John H. Thompson announced today.

Smith will be the principal adviser to the director and deputy director on information resources and information systems management. He will lead the Census Bureau’s information technology program by establishing common enterprise IT services in collaboration with all survey and program areas.

Smith has extensive experience as an IT leader in both the private and public sectors. Prior to joining the Census Bureau, Smith worked for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“Kevin Smith has the exact skill set and experience the Census Bureau needs,” Director John H. Thompson said. “He’s been an IT leader in both government and the private sector, making him uniquely qualified to lead our technological transformation. Kevin will also be an immediate asset to our 2020 Census planning. We look forward to working with him.”

Smith led initiatives to make the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office a more agile and customer centric organization resulting in a higher performing and secure DevOps technology organization. As a federal agency contractor, Smith directed the development and implementation of a strategy and planning system for infrastructure technology modernization.

He has consulted for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and helped stabilize technology in financial and manufacturing organizations. He also developed solutions to resolve new technology problems for media, entertainment, broadcast and life sciences industries as they transitioned into the digital age.

Smith has a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the University of Florida.
