AUG. 30, 2016 — The 2014 Small Area Health Insurance Estimates have been updated to include estimates for insured and uninsured individuals ages 21 to 64. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program requested the new age group to better target at-risk populations per the latest screening guidelines.

These new data are available as downloadable files and have been added to the Small Area Health Insurance Estimates interactive tool. The interactive tool allows users to create customized, downloadable files, thematic maps and time trend charts at the state and county levels, annually for 2006 to 2014, with estimates for ages 21 to 64 starting in 2014.

The Small Area Health Insurance Estimates combine health insurance coverage survey estimates with administrative data and other estimates. Specifically, the data sources include American Community Survey data, population estimates, aggregated federal tax returns, participation records from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, County Business Patterns data, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program participation records and 2010 Census data.

Small Area Health Insurance Estimates provide an important reference for planning and evaluating public health policy for states and all counties.
