Deborah Stempowski has been serving as associate director of the Census Bureau’s Decennial Census Programs since 2022. In this role, she provides executive leadership to the directorate’s divisions and central offices, overseeing and directing the 2030 Census, the American Community Survey, and the Census Bureau’s geographic programs.
Previously, Stempowski served as assistant director for Decennial Census Programs. Among her responsibilities: planning, implementing and evaluating the 2020 Census Program, and early planning for the 2030 Census. In addition to the decennial census, she oversaw the American Community Survey Office, the Decennial Statistical Studies Division, and the Decennial Directorate Support Services Office.
Over her 34-year Census Bureau career, Stempowski has worked in the Director’s Office, the Economic Programs Directorate, and the Research and Methodology Directorate. She also completed a detail to the Office of Management and Budget. She joined the Decennial Programs Directorate in May 2015 as chief of the American Community Survey Office and, a year later, became chief of the Decennial Census Management Division.
Stempowski has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Penn State University and a master’s degree in financial management from the University of Maryland, University College. She also has graduate certificates in project management and in business analysis from George Washington University. She has been a certified project management professional (PMP) since December 2001.
