Acting Chief of Staff, U.S. Census Bureau

Whitney Duffey-Jones is the Census Bureau’s acting chief of staff.

In this role, Duffey-Jones serves as a top advisor to the Census Bureau’s deputy director in efforts to boost agency efficiency, modernize operations, and coordinate senior leadership, field operations and support functions. She plays a key role in overseeing high-priority programs, driving organizational reform, and helping the agency carry out its constitutionally mandated mission.

Duffey-Jones has extensive experience in federal budgeting, data policy, and interagency coordination, previously serving, among other positions, as a budget examiner from 2018 to 2019 at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, where she was responsible for the Census Bureau’s budget portfolio, and as a senior advisor to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce from 2022 to 2024.

She began her federal government career at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2016, working on an initiative to improve the financial operations of the Public Housing program. Prior to joining the federal government, she worked in private industry focusing on policy, operations, and financial management. 

Duffey-Jones has a master’s degree in finance from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with her husband and two daughters.
