NOV. 15, 2021 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released a new technical note on measuring water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in a census as part of the Select Topics in International Censuses series. This technical note discusses advances in the measurement and reporting of WASH and provides actionable guidance for National Statistical Office (NSO) experts to follow as they prepare their census questionnaire and dissemination materials.

Each technical note in this series highlights a new subject, method or operation relevant to census planners in middle- to low-income countries. These notes complement the U.N. Principles and Recommendations on Population and Housing Censuses by describing certain topics in more detail. Sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Select Topics in International Censuses series is designed to help staff in NSOs address some of the significant issues in the 2020 round of censuses.
