Household Pulse Survey Phase 3.10 Monthly Data Release

OCT. 11, 2023 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released new data from phase 3.10 of the experimental Household Pulse Survey (HPS). The HPS is an effort by the Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies to inform federal and state response and recovery planning by providing near real-time data on the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent issues on American households.

Phase 3.10 includes new, reinstated and updated questions. Some previously asked questions have been removed. 
 

New:

  • Split-panel tests of two versions of the gender identity question and the placement of health items in the instrument.
  • Military participation of a spouse.
  • Shortages of critical products.
  • Difficulty accessing medical care/treatment during natural disasters.
  • Opting-in to receive optional surveys and email updates from the Bureau.

Reinstated:

  • Original Hispanic origin.
  • Original Race/ethnicity.
  • Childcare arrangements.
  • Children’s mental health behaviors.

Updated:

  • Existing children’s vaccine booster.
  • Infant formula.
  • Reasons not working.
  • Unemployment insurance.
  • Natural disaster.
  • Contact information.

Removed:

  • Obtaining at home COVID tests.
  • Not working due to the pandemic or natural disaster.
  • Households affected by infant formula shortage.
  • Type of formula used.


The Census Bureau is set to release data from this phase September 20, October 11 and November 8.  HPS results are available on our website through the Household Pulse Survey Interactive Tooldetailed tables and a public-use data file.
