The Census Bureau identified a processing error in how nativity of parent was tabulated for use in 2019 ACS 1-year and 5-year data products. During an update to the program algorithm to account for changes to the relationship question, information about same-sex spouses was mistakenly left out of the calculation. This processing error resulted in a decrease in the estimate of children in two-parent households and a change in the distribution of children in families and subfamilies by nativity of parents.
This issue impacted the following 2019 ACS Detailed Tables: B05009, C05009, B05010, and C05010. It did not affect the 2019 ACS 1-year or 5-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files. The nativity of parent tabulation has included information from same-sex spouses since 2013. Data users interested in seeing the 2019 distribution of nativity of parents for same-sex and opposite-sex spouses alike can refer to the 2019 PUMS files.
Please note that this error was corrected in the 2016-2020 ACS 5-year data products for tables B05009 and B05010. Subsequent releases of tables B05009, C05009, B05010, and C05010 also use the corrected program algorithm.
