Information is one of the most valuable commodities during the time leading up to a disaster and in its immediate aftermath. American Housing Survey (AHS) metropolitan samples contain a wealth of information on housing characteristics and households in specific metropolitan areas. This report documents the information in the AHS that is useful for disaster-planning analyses. This information allows disaster planners to evaluate community resilience, housing stock vulnerability, and potential housing issues that might arise in the aftermath of a disaster. In Addition, the report presents the results of a simulation case study of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan statistical area (MSA) to illustrate how AHS data can be used to evaluate the vulnerability of geographical areas within an MSA. The report concludes with some observations on the limitations of AHS data and potential improvements, such as integrating the data in the AHS with other sources or modifying the survey.
