A new initiative, the Annual Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (AMECS) will collect annual data on manufacturing energy consumption and expenditures for selected energy sources and industries. The AMECS will help capture the rapid changes within the manufacturing sector by measuring energy consumption and related manufacturing characteristics and behaviors; and will provide industry, policymakers, and the public with timely data. AMECS is administered for years when the Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS) is not conducted.

Energy consumption data for this survey are collected from individual manufacturing establishments through electronic self-administered questionnaires. This method facilitates prompt and efficient data collection, minimizes manual errors, and streamlines the aggregation process. The U.S. Census Bureau, working collaboratively with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), is responsible for selecting the sample, overseeing fieldwork, and processing the collected data.

Currently, the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s website offers a summary of the survey’s methodology and implementation procedures, outlines distinctions between reporting cycles, and provide estimates featured in MECS data tables and analyses. AMECS data tables will be published on EIA’s website once estimates become available.
