2. Version 2 of this file was placed on this server on Thursday, January 22, 2004 due to an error found in the veterans weight.
4. The Tenure items (HETENURE, HXTENURE) are available in MDAT (formerly DataFerrett), and are updated only in the months of January, April, July, and October for the previous quarter. Basic CPS files on the CPS site do not include Tenure items. Users must obtain them via MDAT (formerly DataFerrett) and append them appropriately. Tenure items are included on all of the CPS supplement files on the CPS site.
5. The January 2005 files were replaced (May 20, 2005).
6 This file contains a second set of weights to be used in conjunction with the December 2007 original public use file. These weights are controlled to population estimates consistent with the new set of controls introduced in January 2008.
7. The May 2008 data files were replaced (Aug. 4, 2008).
8. The Nov and Dec 2009 data files were replaced to correct the values in HETELHHD, HETELAVL, and HEPHONEO (Jan. 28, 2010).
9. June 10, 2010 - Issue discovered with microdata files for the period from August 2002 through December 2010. In August 2002 an age-masking method was introduced in the creation of the CPS public use microdata files. Inconsistent male/female sex ratios for people 65 and over resulted. The age-masking algorithm was changed effective with the January 2011 public use files, to produce random rather than systematic results. Microdata files 2002 - 2010 were not replaced.
10. May 18, 2011 - The January, February, and March 2011 basic CPS microdata are now available. A new age swapping procedure, implemented in January 2011, protects the confidentiality of individuals in sample.
11. Feb 17, 2012 - We are no longer providing the standard Unix compression type. Most current Unix/Linux machines have zip or gzip utilities.
12. April 3, 2012 - These files were replaced. Please see the User Note for a full explanation.
13. April 3, 2012 - These files were replaced. Please see the User Note for a full explanation.
14. January 11, 2013 - This note applies to all files collected in January 2011 and later. Please see the User Note for a full explanation.
15. September, 24, 2020 - This note applies to Basic CPS files from January 2020 through July 2020. Please see the User Note for a full explanation.
16. March 2021 - The following variables had their prefixes changed from 'PE' or 'PR' to 'PT' in order to reflect that they are top-coded: PTIO1OCD, PTIO2OCD, PTERNHLY, PTERNWA, PTERN2, & PTERNH1C.
17. August 2021 - The 2020 files were corrected for the Paid and Number of Employees variables: PEPDEMP1, PEPDEMP2, PXPDEMP1, PXPDEMP2, PTNMEMP1, PTNMEMP2, PXNMEMP1, PXNMEMP2.
18. January 2023 - New Privacy Disclosure methods have been applied mainly affecting geography and earnings reporting. Please see the User Note for a full explanation.
19. June 2024 - Telework variables PTTLWK, PTTLWKHR, PXTLWK, and PXTLWKHR have been incorporated into the standard Basic file layout at positions 252 – 253, 254 – 255, 840 – 841, and 842 – 843 respectively. Prior to June 2024, these data were provided by way of an extract file, separate from the basic monthly CPS files. The data now are a part of the basic monthly file, with new variable names as given above.
20. April 2025 – The April 2025 file is re-released in May 2025, due to incorrect values for some observations, for the following geography variables: GTCBSA, GTCO, GTCBSAST, GTMETSTA, GTINDVPC, GTCBSASZ, and GTCSA. Only observations in the first rotation (MIS=1) are affected.
21. Starting in May, 2025, the CPS will begin the changeover to a new sample based on the results of the 2020 Census. This is a continuation of standard procedures as the sample for CPS is always redesigned after every Census. As has been the procedure in the past few redesigns, this changeover will be phased-in one rotation group at a time. See the chart below to see how the new design and definitions will phase-in.
These definitions will phase-in concurrently with the new design using the same phase-in pattern. Along with a different set of PSUs, we will also be changing over to CBSA definitions based on the results of the new Census following the same phase-in pattern.
There is one other change to be aware of during this phase-in. The State of Connecticut is no longer using the county based CBSA definitions. Instead, they switch over to a set of CBSA definitions that follow the State’s Planning Regions. Seven of these regions are metropolitan based and combined into five metropolitan CBSAs that are identified individually on the PUFs. There are also two Planning Regions that are nonmetropolitan. These areas are identified as non-metropolitan on the PUFs. For more information on this changeover, please refer to the following documents: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/06/06/2022-12063/change-to-county-equivalents-in-the-state-of-connecticut and https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/OMB-Bulletin-23-01.pdf.
Please note that the geographic definitions for the 2010 and 2020 Connecticut CBSAs while in most cases retained the same or a similar name and CBSA code number, the specific boundaries are in many cases very different. It is recommended that one does not attempt to compare any Connecticut substate geographies with each other or between the 2 sets of definitions or the data during the phase-in period as any such analysis may be subject to differences related to the geographic boundary changes and not actual statistical differences.
22. June 2025 – The April 2025 file is re-released in June 2025, due to an incorrect derived variable used in the weighting process. Values are corrected for the following weight variables:
HWHHWGT
PWSSWGT
PWLGWGT
PWVETWGT
PWORWGT
PWFMWGT
PWCMPWGT
The error also affected a limited number of observations for the following geography and earnings variables, which are corrected in this release: GTCBSA, GTCO, GTCBSAST, GTMETSTA, GTINDVPC, GTCBSASZ, GTCSA, PTERNHLY, PTERNH1O, PTERNH2, PTERNWA, and PTERN.
