The 2020 PES included three matching operations to compare housing unit (HU) and person data collected in the PES with 2020 Census data. For the Person Matching operation, data from the PES Person Interview (PI) and the 2020 Census went through several stages of automated processing and clerical review. In addition to the PI, the Person Matching operation used data collected from the Person Followup (PFU) operation.
The Person Matching operation included the following automated and clerical components: Automated residence status coding (RSC), Automated geocoding, Clerical RSC, Clerical geocoding (CGC), Person computer matching, Person before follow-up (BFU) clerical matching, and Person after follow-up (AFU) clerical matching.
These automated and clerical components were used to determine which people rostered at Independent Listing (IL) addresses selected for the PI should be included in the P sample, if the P-sample person was enumerated by census, and if the E-sample person enumerated by census was correctly enumerated.
The results of the automated and clerical components from the Person Matching operation were used as an input into the creation of the PES estimates of census coverage of people in housing units.
