The 2021 SIPP continued to face data collection complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a general lower-than-average unit response rate nationally. For technical documentation and more information about SIPP data quality, please visit the Technical Documentation page.
📢 The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in substantial mid-year changes in the landscape of certain social safety net programs in the U.S.; however, 2021 SIPP data do not fully reflect known volatility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also sometimes called food stamps) and unemployment insurance (UI, also sometimes called unemployment compensation). In response to these data concerns, the Census Bureau released a supplemental research file that contains experimental versions of SNAP and UI estimates, derived using experimental edit and imputation processes. Please see the Is there a Safety Net for Surveys? working paper and 2021 SIPP Research File data page for more information.
📢 2021 SIPP data were updated on 7/24/2025 to correct an issue with Social Security Income Processing. Please see this year’s Release Notes for more information.
