For 2022 SIPP, the reference period for the school meals questions changed to ask about meals received during the academic year as opposed to the previous calendar year (variables ESCHOOLBREAK and ESCHOOLLUNCH). This change allows school meals estimates to reflect participation by school year, facilitating both collection from respondents and utilization of the data in research. Previous and current school meals question text is below.
Previous (example for lunches): “Between January 1st and the end of December 2021, did your child(ren) usually get the lunch that their school provides?”
Current (example for lunches): “Since the beginning of the current academic school year, did your child(ren) usually get the lunch that their school provides?”
Data users should exercise caution when comparing 2014-2021 SIPP school meals estimates to 2022 SIPP school meals estimates.
