To provide key intercensal measures of comprehensive company-wide data, including company support organization and selected financial activities. The United States Code, Title 13, authorizes this program and provides for mandatory responses.
All private enterprises and their establishments operating in the United States are included, except those enterprises primarily operating in the following NAICS industries:
Selected activities of governments are also covered, including hospitals, liquor stores, university press publishers, and Federal Reserve Banks.
Published data include the number of enterprises, number of establishments, research and development activity, sales and receipts, annual payroll, royalties, manufacturing activities, and employment size. The data are crosstabulated by industry specialization ratio and employment size categories, though these will not be available in all tables.
Enterprise Statistics data are collected annually as part of the Report of Organization Survey (COS), except for years ending in 2 and 7, at which time Enterprise Statistics data are collected with the economic census.
Methodology for the Enterprise Statistics Program (ESP) is currently being developed. Data from the Business Register, administrative records, and survey records will be combined to produce reports.
The Census Bureau will resume publication of Enterprise Statistics reports with the 2012 Economic Census in February 2016 following publication of the economic census industry reports.
The Enterprise Statistics Program will provide enterprise-level data for statistical use in various economic programs. Researchers will be able to use the data to study trends in enterprises over time.
Enterprise Statistics data provide the only source of economy-wide company-level statistics and data to relate the activities of companies and their affiliated establishments.
