Tenth Census - Volumes 16 & 17. Reports on the Water Power of the United States.

According to the returns of the Tenth Census, there were in use for anufacturing in the United States, in 1880, 55,404 water-wheels, using a total power of 1,225,370 horse-power, this being 35.93 percent of the total power used in the country for manufacturing purposes.
