1920 Census Monograph 2. Mortgages on Homes

A Report on the Results of the Inquiry as to the Mortgage Debt on Homes Other Than Farm Homes at the Fourteenth Census, 1920

This is the second in a series of 11 monographs issued from the Fourteenth Census, taken in the year 1920, designed to include analysis and interpretation of important subjects covered by the census.

Monograph II “has a profound significance in the development both of economic life and of economic thought in the U.S.” and is designated by the term “land economics.” The basic data for this report include three items: the value of the mortgaged homes, the amount of the mortgage debt, and the rate of interest.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
