Provision for the 1940 Agriculture Census was made in the Act providing for the Fifteenth Decennial Census which was approved on June 18, 1929. Data in Volume II, comprising the third series Census of Agriculture reports, were first published in a separate bulletin for each of the forty-eight States and the District of Columbia. The reports are the results obtained from a tabulation of the information given by farm operators to census enumerators in a personal canvass in connection with the Sixteenth Decennial Census.
Volume II consists of three parts, presenting detailed statistics, respectively, for (1) the Northern States, (2) the Southern States, (3) the Western States.
This volume incorporates the third series State bulletins for agriculture. County data are presented for amount of income received from sales of various livestock and livestock products, field crops, vegetables, fruits and nuts, horticultural specialties, and forest products, together with the value of farm products used by farm households. These data are also given by income groups and by the major source of income.
In addition, data are shown for the value of livestock on farms, the value of livestock products, and the value of all crops harvested. These latter values, in general, are based on inventory or production multiplied by county unit prices.
These documents only contain the specific state tables. The introductory material is included in the parts above.
