Educational attainment among males 20 to 44 years old in the United States in 1940 ranged from a median of 10.9 years (the equivalent of almost 3 years of high school) for those 20 to 24 years old, to a median of 8.6 years (the equivalent of more than 8 years of grade school) for those aged 40 to 44, according to an analysis of 1940 census statistics issued by Director J.C. Capt of the Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce.
