This special report presents statistics relating to the state of birth of the native population in continental United States in 1940 with comparable data back to 1850 in some of the tables. The data are presented for regions, divisions, States, urban and rural, and cities of 100,000 inhabitants or more. The last five tables relate to the state of birth of children under 5 years of age.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
