This report presents a compilation of data from the 1970 census on the number of persons of voting age by states. These figures are also published separately in the individual state reports of the PC(1)·B series. Table 1 shows a summary of selected characteristics of the population of voting age. Detailed data by age, sex, and race are shown in table 2.The figures here relate to age as of April 1, 1970, but they provide reasonable approximations of the size of each age group in November 1972.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
