This report presents detailed statistics for the United States and regions for persons by characteristics of the households and families of which they are members. The statistics are based on the 1970 Census of Population.

The text consists of an introduction and Appendices A through E, which appear after the tables.

Content of the Tables

The tables present data for persons by the composition and social and economic characteristics of the families of which they are members. Among the aspects of family composition presented are presence of children, grandchildren, and other relatives of the head; presence of subfamilies; presence and marital status of parents; and marital history of family heads and married couples.

Social characteristics of families by which families are classified in these tables include age, sex, and educational attainment of head. Economic characteristics of the family include occupation and income of head and chief income recipient in the family, family income, and hours worked by head or chief income recipient.

The tables also give information on household and family status of all persons, including persons not in families, by age, with cross-classifications by sex and marital status for the population 14 years old and over; these tables include detailed type of group quarters for persons in group quarters. Also shown are statistics on selected characteri sties of household heads, statistics on characteristics of members of households headed by primary individuals, and statistics on sons and daughters in husband-wife families with all of the wife's children present.

Sample size. The statistics in this report are based on the 5-percent sample adjusted to represent the total population (see "Data Collection Procedures" in Appendix A).
