1970 Census - Lifetime and Recent Migration by Educational Attainment for the United States

PC(S1)-46

In this report, state (or division) of birth is compared with state (or division) of residence in 1965 and state of residence in 1970. Column 2 of table 2 shows persons who were living in their state of birth in 1965 and 1970—indicating a relatively high degree of residential stability. At the opposite extreme were persons who were living outside their state of birth in 1965 and in still another state in 1970 (column 5).

The data presented here are reprinted from tables 2 and 12 of Final Report PC(2)-2D, Lifetime and Recent Migration, which contains additional information on state of birth and state of residence in 1965, cross-classified with age, race, employment status and major occupation group, income in 1969, children ever born, and enrollment status and relative progress of children in school.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
