Changes in American Family Life

Written by:
Report Number: P23-163

Overview

This report provides a graphic overview of recent trends in the life-styles of Americans. The trends indicate a movement away from "traditional" family living. These include changes in marital status, age at first marriage, and living arrangements—for those living alone and those living with persons not conventionally related to them. It also covers other social changes—in child care and support, for instance—as well as labor force data for women with newborn children. In addition, the report includes some income and poverty data. The report presents color graphs instead of statistical tables.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
