The Hispanic Population in the United States: March 1996 (Update)

Detailed tabulations are now available which provide statistics on the civilian noninstitutional Hispanic population of the United States, based on the March 1996 Current Population Survey.

These tables provide information such as:

  • An estimated 28.4 million persons of Hispanic origin resided in the United States in 1996, representing 10.8 percent of the total population.

  • Persons of Mexican origin were the largest Hispanic group in the United States in 1996, comprising 63 percent of the total Hispanic population.

  • About one-half (53 percent) of all Hispanics 25 years and over had at least a high school diploma in 1996.
