During 1996, a total of 191,300 privately financed, nonsubsidized, unfurnished, rental apartments in buildings of five units or more were completed in permit-issuing areas in the United States. This was a 23 (± 11) percent increase over the 155,000 like completions in 1995, and an 84 (± 19) percent increase over the 104,000 such units completed in 1994. It was the largest number of such completions since the 214,300 units in 1990.
