Going to school opens doors. It provides equality of opportunity and facilitates the pathway for future individual achievement and economic success. Today, with more than one-fourth of America’s population enrolled in school, the student population is quite diverse. This report highlights school enrollment trends and the social and eco- nomic characteristics of the student population. The findings are based on data collected in the Current Population Survey (CPS) conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in October 1997.
