In 2011, 24,055 multi-establishment enterprises with at  least 250 employees operated  in the United States.   These enterprises operated 1.3 million individual  establishments, earned $19.6 trillion in revenue,  employed 55.8 million people, and had a combined  annual payroll of $2.9 trillion.  More than 1,660  enterprises generated a total  of $190.4 billion in revenue  from royalties and license fees for rights to use  intellectual property.  Of the 18,145 enterprises that  responded to the contract manufacturing item, nearly  1,100 reported purchasing contract manufacturing  services from other enterprises or foreign subsidiaries.
