Statistics of U.S. Businesses Employment and Payroll Summary: 2012

Large enterprises employed more than half of all employees for the sixth consecutive year.

In 2012, large enterprises employed 59.9 million people (51.6 percent of all employees), very small enterprises employed 20.4 million people (17.6 percent), small enterprises employed 19.4 million people (16.7 percent), and medium enterprises employed 16.3 million people (14.0 percent).

SUSB annual or static data include number of firms, number of establishments, employment, annual payroll, and receipts for most U.S. business establishments. The data are tabulated by geographic area, industry, and enterprise employment or receipts size. The industry classification is based on 2012 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. An establishment with 0 employment is an establishment with no paid employees in the mid-March pay period but with paid employees at some time during the year.

Receipts data are available only for Economic Census years (years ending in 2 & 7).

Data User Notice posted on February 9, 2016: Census Bureau staff identified a processing error that affects selected data from the 2012 Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB). As a result, we revised 2012 employment, payroll, and estimated receipts totals in the Educational Services sector (Sector 61) for the following geographies: Massachusetts; New Mexico; Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH metro area; Albuquerque, NM metro area; Middlesex County, MA; and Bernalillo County, NM. This processing error did not affect other sectors or states.

Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs):

MSA's are now based on January 2012 definitions.
