Value of shipments and cost of materials among manufacturing subsectors in 2019 ranged from $4.5 billion and $2.3 billion, to $957.5 billion and $614.1 billion, respectively. Transportation and equipment manufacturing, North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) subsector 336, had the largest value of shipments and cost of materials ($957.5 billion and $614.1 billion). Food manufacturing, NAICS subsector 311, ranked second in value of shipments and cost of materials ($794.1 billion and $485.1 billion). Chemical manufacturing, NAICS subsector 325, ranked third in value of shipments, at $720.2 billion, while ranking fourth in cost of materials, at $322.9 billion. Petroleum and coal products manufacturing, NAICS subsector 324, had the fourth largest value of shipments, at $595.7 billion, while ranking third in cost of materials, at $468.7 billion. Leather and allied product manufacturing, NAICS subsector 316, had the lowest value of shipments and cost of materials ($4.5 billion and $2.3 billion). Apparel manufacturing, NAICS subsector 315, ranked
second lowest in value of shipments and cost of materials ($10 billion and $4.4 billion). Textile product mills, NAICS subsector 314, ranked third lowest in value of shipments at $22.9 billion and cost of materials at $11.6 billion.
